Audra — Offline AudiobookShelf player for iPhone

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to use Audra?

Audra is a client for AudiobookShelf, a free, open-source, self-hosted audiobook and podcast server. You need your own AudiobookShelf server running and reachable from your iPhone. Audra is not a content store and does not provide any audiobooks or podcasts itself.

How do I connect to my server?

On the sign-in screen, enter your server's full address (including any subpath, e.g. https://my-server:8080 or https://my-nas/audiobookshelf), then your AudiobookShelf username and password.

My server uses a self-signed certificate

Many home servers (e.g. on a Synology NAS) use a self-signed HTTPS certificate. Enable Allow insecure HTTPS on the sign-in screen so Audra will trust it. Servers with a valid certificate don't need this.

Does it work offline?

Yes — that's the point. Anything you download appears in your Library and plays with no connection at all. Browsing the ABS catalog and the Podcasts directory needs a connection, since that content lives online until you download it.

Can't reach the server

Audra can only reach a server your phone can reach. If your server is only on your home network, you'll need to be on that network (or set up your own remote access, such as a VPN). Check that the address, port, and HTTPS setting match your server, and that no firewall is blocking it.

Does CarPlay work?

Yes. Your downloaded Library is available in CarPlay for hands-free listening, with standard Now Playing controls.

Where is my listening progress kept?

Progress is saved on your device as you listen and backed up to your own private iCloud, so it survives reinstalling the app. Audra reads your server's "finished" state to hide already-played items, and marks items played on the server when you ask it to.

An item won't play / says the format isn't supported

Audra plays the audio formats supported by iOS. A few formats AudiobookShelf can serve (such as Ogg/Opus) aren't supported by iOS and can't be played. Most audiobooks and podcasts (M4A/M4B, MP3) play fine.
